Data loss has different meanings depending on who you are and what you lose and the overall cost of replacing data. For example if a computer programmer was to lose access to 7 years of his or her code the results could be quite damaging. Assuming the programmer is contracted for a corporate outfit then they will not pay for what they do not receive. The loss is the salary of the programmer, the loss for the company of the application; no one can go to the local computer store and buy their data to reinstall. Loss of an operating system with no user data is not a costly data loss; the system can be restored from the operating system CD in a few hours or an Image file in just a few minutes.

It is not just businesses who lose data; data loss can affect anyone who does not back up their data and test the backups regularly. Most modern households own at least one digital camera, these units use small storage devices storing the data (Photographs), the photographs could be parental baby / children growing up. This sort of data cannot be replaced ever.

In the event of data loss many people start to search the internet to seek help or guidance, often unaware that if they are using a PC with the same data which has been lost, that they themselves are actually overwriting data. Thus harming their own chances of a recovery.

It is better for anyone suffering from lost or damaged data to
