Question by Evan’s mommy is Preston’s mom too now!: Do hospitals take cord blood with out permission or is that Illegal?

I heard a nurse say “Did you get the cord blood” to another nurse after I delivered my son. Is it legal for them to take it. I specifically asked for them to not allow cutting until cord was not pulsating any longer, I am totally freaked out for some reason when I think about this.
It freaks me out because I feel like my wishes were violated and they seemed sneaky but hey I was tired so whoo the heck knows if they were being sneaky or not.
Cutting the cord before pulsation stops lowers baby’s iron level.

Question by bids.kolkata: has anybody experienced a real life case who was administered banked “cord-blood”?

cord blood is an insurance for genetic disorders like thalassemia, cancers, etc. A newly born baby’s umblical cord blood is drawn within 10 mins of the baby being born. Thereafter this blood is banked in special blood banks to facilitate the collection of properly matched bone marrow, etc.

I haven’t experienced first hand a case of someone who was able to use the cord blood but I have read several stories of children or families with a sick child that was given the transplant as part of their treatment and were “cured.”

Cord Blood

Frontiers of Cord Blood Science

Cord blood is a significant source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells for the treatment of blood and genetic disorders. Cord blood is also an alternative to embryos as a source of tissue for regenerative medicine. Cells from cord blood have been shown to transdifferentiate into nonhematopoietic cells, including those of the brain, heart, liver, pancreas, bone, and cartilage, in tissue culture and in animal systems. Recently it has been demonstrated that both cardiac and glial cell differ

My Baby! C-section

This is the point during my wife’s C-section where the Anesthesiologist said "Quick! Take a picture!" And bravely I raised the camera over the divider and blindly took a shot. Chicken you say? Hell yeah! They’re just about to cut the cord.

Cord Blood Stem Cell Banking ? Why Do Parents Consider Banking of Stem Cells?

Cord blood stem cell collection is a necessary act, but not routine in delivery rooms. Expectant parents are recommended to plan for cord blood donation early since nearly 50% of the vaginal child deliveries take place before the scheduled date. In such cases, even the most enthusiast parents seem to lose the opportunity to preserve their child’s umbilical cord cells that contain life saving potential for their newborn baby or other members of families. Therefore, plan and contact an umbilical cord blood bank for storing the miraculous stem cells. It is suggested that the interested parents do some research themselves about the various options available for preserving their baby’s stem cells in a cord blood bank.

When To Contact A Cord Blood Bank

Medical practitioners advise yet-to-be parents to plan for cord blood stem cell banking as early as the fourth month of the pregnancy. Most of the parents decide to bank cord blood cells if they have a family history of a particular disease that is treatable by bone marrow transplant or have a family member who is ailing with one of the disease that suggest bone marrow transplant treatment. The mother has to undergo special medical tests to ensure that she is eligible for the donation. In addition, she has to sign a consent form.
